چکیده

In this paper we propose an enhancement to the TCP protocol, called TCP Smart-Framing(TCP-SF), that enables the Fast Recovery algorithm for short lived flows, as most of the current Internet traffic is. Without modifying the TCP congestion control based on the additive-increase/multiplicative-decrease paradigm, TCP Smart-Framing adopts a novel segmentation algorithm: while classic TCP starts sending one segment, a TCP-SF source is allowed to send an initial window of 4 smaller segments, whose aggregate payload is equal to the connection’s MSS. This key idea can be implemented on top of any TCP flavor, from Tahoe to SACK, and requires modifications to the server behavior only. Simulation results, as well as testbed implementation measurements show that TCP Smart-Framing sources are able to outperform classic TCP in terms of completion time.

TCP Smart Framing: A Segmentation Algorithm to Improve TCP Performance

In this paper we propose an enhancement to the TCP protocol, called TCP Smart Framing, or TCP-SF for short, that enables the Fast Retransmit/Recovery algorithm even when the congestion window is small. TCP-SF is particularly effective for short-lived flows, as most of the current Internet traffic is. Without modifying the TCP congestion control based on the additive-increase/multiplicativedecre...

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

Transport layer performance analysis and optimization for smart metering infrastructure

In a smart power grid, collecting data from a large number of smart meters and sensors over the conventional one-hop transmission control protocol (TCP) communication is prone to a high packet loss rate and degraded throughput due to the ineffectiveness of the TCP congestion control mechanism. The Split and Aggregated TCP (SA-TCP) proposes upgrading intermediate devices (known as regional colle...

Improving TCP Performance over Multi-Slot GSM

In this paper, we examine the effects of TCP over a Multi-Slot GSM testbed as well as improving the performance of TCP using a smart link-level retransmission scheme. The smart link-level retransmission scheme (also known as the Snoop Protocol [1]), which was developed at the University of California in Berkeley, was designed to reduce the number of duplicate acknowledgements from returning to ...

Tackling Bufferbloat in 3G/4G Mobile Networks

With the exponential growth of hand-held devices like smart phones and tablet computers, a deep investigation of TCP performance in cellular networks is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we conducted extensive measurements over the 3G/4G networks of four major U.S. carriers as well as the largest carrier in Korea and discovered a significant problem: the bufferbloat in cellular ne...
